Printed Hollow Form Object

 Printed Hollow Form Object

This is a continuation of my previous blog post, in which I have chosen one of my concepts and refined it to the point that it is ready to be printed. Of the six various concepts that can be seen in my previous blog post, I decided to go with what I call the "Ice Cream," due to it's spiraling design that happens to look like soft serve.

Although it doesn't appear that I've really done anything to alter this concept, I have made changes to increase the odds of a successful print, and taken feedback from classmates into consideration. The biggest change that I made based on feed back is going from a solid bottom layer to a hollow one, as it was pointed out to me that it'd add a very interesting element to my design by being able to see the inside of the spiral. Aside from that I smoothed out the transition near the upper 1/3rd where the taper becomes steeper, & truncated the tip or "point" at the top of the spiral earlier. This is because when I threw it into PrusaSlicer, and sliced it, the preview showed little floating dots as a result of just how tiny it was. I did consider that it may still have worked, but decided against trying it as I'm already taking a risk with the overhangs caused by the degree of twist my object has. Furthermore, even if it did all work out, I worry that it'd be extremely fragile.

Although Technically Truncated it still visually appears to come to a point

Print Settings:

The settings I intend to use for printing are:

  • Spiral Tool path as I think that the appearance of such will work well with the spiral design
  • Double Perimeter to increase rigidity
  • Hollow Bottom layer so one can see the inside of the spiral as well
